The lead-up to the Women’s World Cup has been a dramatic time for American star Megan Rapinoe.
A clip of Rapinoe filmed months prior by soccer magazine Eight by Eight went viral in late June.
“I’m not going to the f– White House,” she said, referencing the tradition of winning sports teams visiting the White House to celebrate their victory. Rapinoe has called herself a “walking protest” of the Trump administration.
The quote was embraced by some and reviled by others. And then the president himself weighed in.
“Megan should WIN first before she TALKS,” President Donald Trump tweeted.
Well, now she’s won —on Sunday, Rapinoe and the U.S. women won their fourth World Cup title with a 2-0 win over the Netherlands.
Rapinoe’s coolly taken penalty, following a video review, put the defending champions ahead in the 61st minute. Midfielder Rose Lavelle’s fine solo goal made it 2-0 in the 69th, as she powered to the edge of the penalty area and hit a low strike.
Twitter, of course, quickly named Rapinoe the new American president after her stirring performance. To see the funniest memes and reactions to the U.S. victory, check out the gallery above.
