You’d think with Yasiel Puig no longer around, Madison Bumgarner could have a civil game against the Dodgers, but that was not the case after a Max Muncy home run in a 1-0 Giants loss turned into a shouting match Sunday afternoon.
Muncy hit a towering first-inning home run off Bumgarner that splashed into McCovey Cove – the only run either team would score all game. Muncy walked four steps while watching the blast, with a modest bat flip (watch the whole thing in the video embedded below).
As the Chronicle’s Henry Schulman reported, that was enough to make Bumgarner shout at Muncy as he rounded first, “Don’t watch the ball.”
Muncy’s response? “If you don’t want me to watch the ball, you can go in the ocean and get it.” Muncy made a kind of come-hither gesture with his hand and they continued jawing at each other while he rounded the bases.
Despite the posturing, there were no other incidents between the teams the rest of the way.
Bumgarner made some light of the encounter after the game.
“I can’t even say it with a straight face, but the more I think about it, they should let the kids play,” Bumgarner said. “That’s what everybody’s saying. But I can’t.”
“He just struck a pose and walked further than I liked. If you want to do that, do it, but I’m going to do what I want to do. If they want to let everybody be themselves, let me be myself. That’s me. I’d just assume fight than walk or whatever.
“Just do your thing. I’ll do mine.”
